Summer Newsletter - NOTICE TO ALL POND WATCHERS!

In the current climate of wanting and needing to insure for all and any eventuality, we note one area for which insurance might not be an option in view of the prohibitive costs!

It relates to a problem much is much in the news, namely contamination.

Under Section 14 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is an offence to grow or propagate certain types of plant.  One of these, the notorious Japanese knotweed, has become a menace in some areas and is extremely difficult to eradicate, taking years if at all!

Japanese knotweed is classified as ‘controlled waste’ under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and a notice requiring remediation can issue. It must be treated on site or disposed of in a licensed landfill site to avoid further proliferation of the weed which suffocates native plant and animal species when it takes hold.
